Lectors are ministers of the word. They proclaim the first and second readings at Mass. They also lead the Prayer of the Faithful.

A lector must have the qualifications listed below and have a desire to minister in this capacity at the Eucharistic liturgy. The Lector must be of excellent character and serious about the practice of the faith.

How does a person become a Lector?

Parishioners who have this gift may volunteer to the coordinator of lectors and make their desire known to the pastor as well. However, lectors will be selected after all other criteria have been established on the basis of objective pastoral need.

Lectors are carefully chosen based on their skills in proclamation, their willingness to complete formation in this ministry and their evidence of a deep spirituality. Proper measures are taken to ensure that the qualified prospects are trained to carry out this ministry well. Being truly suited implies the necessary talents to serve as a lector. Thus, individuals who are not able to proclaim the readings in a clear manner that expresses the dignity of scripture may not be suited for this service in church.
